What Types Of Gas Hot Water Systems Are Available?
At S&J Plumbing and Gasfitting, we work with a variety of hot water systems including both major types of gas water heaters. Both instantaneous and gas-heated water tanks are commonly used gas hot water systems here in Brisbane, and our team has the expertise to install, repair, and maintain both of these systems.
Gas-Heated Water Tanks
While less common today in Brisbane, gas-heated water tanks were the go-to gas hot water systems for many years. They work by heating water using a gas-fired burner located at the bottom of the tank. The hot water then rises and is drawn off the top to reach your tap, shower, washing machine, or other appliances.
Instantaneous Gas Hot Water
Instantaneous gas hot water systems heat water on-demand, and do not use a storage tank. In general, they are more popular today as they are seen as more efficient.

Gas Hot Water System FAQs
No. If floodwater has reached the bottom of your gas hot water system, don't turn it on or attempt to restart it. Floodwater can affect gas connections and internal components, and you cannot confirm that the system is safe simply by checking if it still works.
According to the Queensland Government's gas safety guidance, flood-affected gas installations and appliances must be inspected by a licensed gasfitter before use. If the natural gas network operator identifies an unsafe installation, they can disconnect the gas supply and attach a warning tag to the meter.
You'll need to arrange and pay for a licensed gasfitter to inspect, test and repair your gas installation. Your home insurance or Queensland Government natural disaster relief payments could help cover the cost if you're eligible.
No. A higher star rating tells you that a gas hot water system uses energy more efficiently, but it doesn't guarantee a lower gas bill. For gas hot water systems, you also need to look at how the unit heats water. A continuous-flow system heats water when you open a hot tap, while a storage system keeps water heated inside a tank. Gas storage systems lose heat through the tank, particularly where the gas flame heats the water. This can increase gas consumption even when nobody is using hot water.
S&J Plumbers suggest homeowners to compare models of similar capacity and check their gas consumption figures, which manufacturers commonly express in megajoules (MJ). Your gas bill shows the rate you pay for gas so you can estimate costs based on expected consumption. Remember that gas water heaters use an industry-run star rating system, separate from the government's familiar red-and-yellow Energy Rating Label.
Yes. If you're replacing your gas hot water system with an eligible solar hot water system or air-source heat pump, you can access Australian Government incentives through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
Under this scheme, eligible hot water systems qualify for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). You can assign your right to create these certificates to a registered agent in exchange for an upfront discount on the system's purchase price. The amount depends on the model, installation location and date.
Not every solar or heat pump hot water system qualifies. Before purchasing, check your chosen model against the Clean Energy Regulator's register of eligible hot water systems. You can also ask your retailer to show the STC discount separately on your quote so you know how much you'll pay after the incentive.
Your Rheem gas hot water system can deliver water hotter than the controller setting due to certain installation configurations or temperature compensation adjustments. However, this doesn't apply to every Rheem model.
According to Rheem's continuous-flow gas water heater installation guide, certain 876-series models allow qualified technicians to adjust the outlet temperature to compensate for heat lost as hot water travels through the pipework. These adjustments depend on the heater model and installation requirements.
If your water consistently comes out hotter than the selected temperature, contact S&J Plumbing & Gasfitting. S&J Plumbers’ licensed gasfitters can inspect your Rheem hot water system, check the controller and identify what's causing the temperature difference. Avoid adjusting the heater's internal temperature controls yourself.
Your Thermann continuous-flow gas hot water system can briefly activate even when nobody is using hot water. Thermann calls this process Periodic Initialization, a maintenance routine that runs for approximately 10 seconds every 24 hours after you connect power to the unit.
According to Thermann's official FAQs, this routine helps prevent the internal water valve from sticking and supports the system's long-term operation. You might hear the unit operating even though nobody has turned on a hot tap.
The timing also depends on when your system last received power. For example, if a power outage interrupts your unit's electricity supply at 3 am, the routine could begin running at that time each day once power returns.
If the noise disturbs your household, Thermann recommends resetting the routine at a more convenient time:
Choose when you'd prefer the daily routine to run, such as 11 am.
Turn off the power point and disconnect the unit's power lead at that time.
Wait at least 30 seconds before reconnecting the power lead and switching the power point back on.
The routine should then run at approximately the same time the following day. However, this explanation applies to Thermann continuous-flow models that use Periodic Initialization, not every gas hot water system. If your Thermann unit runs for longer than expected, activates repeatedly or makes unusual noises outside this brief daily routine, contact S&J Plumbing & Gasfitting.
Not always. You can keep your existing gas pipes if they can safely supply enough gas to the replacement Thermann hot water system. However, some models require a higher gas flow rate, particularly when switching from a gas storage tank to a continuous-flow system.
According to Thermann, gas hot water systems have different gas pressure and volume requirements. For example, Thermann's G-Series continuous-flow units have nominal gas consumption ratings ranging from 125 MJ/h for the 16L model to 199 MJ/h for the 26L model. Your existing gas pipework must be capable of supplying the new unit alongside any other gas appliances in your home.
Before installing your new Thermann hot water system, our licensed gasfitters at S&J Plumbing & Gasfitting can check your existing gas supply and pipework to see if they can support your chosen model.
