Backflow Testing Brisbane

At S&J Plumbing and Gasfitting, we provide regulation backflow testing and full reporting to ensure your backflow prevention device is operating as it should.

Our Backflow Testing & Prevention Services

Regular maintenance and testing of backflow prevention systems is required for many residents in Brisbane and throughout the state of Queensland. This is to prevent dangerous situations in which water supplies become contaminated with chemicals, sewage, and other hazardous foreign contaminants. At S&J, we offer both installation of backflow prevention devices and ongoing maintenance and testing.

Backflow Prevention

At S&J Plumbing and Gasfitting, we supply, install, and maintain backflow prevention devices for your plumbing system. The devices we work with include both testable and non-testable devices; which type is right for your property will depend on your contamination risk level. If your property requires a backflow prevention device, or if you already have one installed, the S&J team is here to help ensure your water supply is kept safe.

Backflow Testing

Local governments within Queensland mandate regular backflow testing and reporting for those with testable backflow prevention devices, including the Brisbane City Council. Our backflow maintenance services include regular testing that meets government standards and ensures your backflow prevention device is protecting your water supply. We issue a full report providing proof of completed testing.

What Is Backflow and How Does It Occur?

Backflow occurs when water flows from a property’s mains plumbing network back into the main supply, potentially poisoning the water supply for other users. Backflow is typically caused by one of two situations:

Backsiphonage

Occurs when the pressure in the mains supply drops significantly. This may happen due to a leak or a draw that significantly reduces the flow of water, such as a fire hydrant being used upstream.

Backpressure

Occurs when the pressure within a property’s plumbing network exceeds the pressure of the water supply from the mains.

The Importance of Backflow Prevention

When backflow occurs, it can lead to contaminated drinking water, a highly dangerous situation. Depending on the source, backflow may cause people to become sick or nauseous, infected with diseases, or much worse. A backflow prevention device is a one-way valve that prevents water from re-entering the main water supply once it has entered a property’s plumbing network.

Backflow is most concerning in properties that have plant equipment or similar connected to the water supply. Other common reasons to include a backflow prevention device into your plumbing network include:

  • An irrigation system

  • Fire hose reels or fire hydrants

  • Commercial or industrial equipment or activities that could pollute the drinking water supply (air conditioning cooling towers, chemical cleaning areas, etc.)

  • Water outlets in proximity to pollutants, grease traps, or chemicals

  • An alternate water supply

If you’re unsure whether your property needs a backflow prevention device, it’s best to consult with a plumbing professional.

"These guys were prompt when we called them with no hot water and a blocked drain. They were reliable, honest and took pride in their business. I called 5 local plumbers and they were the only ones who picked up and then made space for us as we needed urgent help. And in the following days, only one of the other plumbers called back. I was very impressed with their work and will definitely be going back to them with any future plumbing needs. Thank you for everything!"

Backflow Testing & Prevention FAQs

Why is backflow testing needed?

Backflow prevention is a matter of public health, and testing helps to ensure prevention devices are operating properly. The implications of a failing backflow prevention device are severe as this can leave you, your loved ones, tenants, or the general public—depending on the type of building—at risk of consuming contaminated water.

How often must backflow preventers be tested?

In Brisbane and most localities within Queensland, testable backflow prevention devices must be tested at least once every 12 months. Written proof of testing must be provided to the local council.

What if a backflow test fails?

Failure may be a result of damage or poor maintenance. A backflow prevention device may need to be cleaned or otherwise serviced before the testing can be done again. In some cases, the device may need to be fully replaced.
