- Table Heaters - More compact circular units to provide warmth over seating areas with a variety of stylish design options.
- Infrared Patio Heaters - Emit infrared waves mimicking heat of the sun. Wall or ceiling mounted units available.
- Outdoor Gas Fireplaces - Classical brick or modern metallic fireplaces tailored to outdoor spaces providing comfort and ambiance.
With experience across all the leading outdoor gas heater brands and fuel types, we can advise the right style and capacity tailored to your home or business needs.
Outdoor Heater Installation
The S&J Plumbing and Gasfitting team handles complete outdoor gas heater installation.
Our process:
- Site Evaluation - We thoroughly assess the outdoor area intended for heating, checking clearances, ventilation, proximity to structures and layout to determine optimal heater placement. Safety is assessed ensuring no flammable materials are nearby and walkways remain unobstructed. We validate sufficient coverage based on the heater specifications and range.
- Gas Line Connections - New gas line runs or extensions from existing gas meter/sources are installed meeting piping standards. Weatherproof enclosures protect valves and fittings. Appliance connectors are mounted securely.
- Mounting and Positioning - Based on the area being heated and appliance directives, heaters must be properly wall mounted or post mounted to ensure stability and access. Weatherproof covers or wiring protects vulnerable components.
- Testing and Validation - Once installation is fully complete, extensive burner testing across all settings is conducted to guarantee flawless ignition, an intact external heat perimeter and automatic safety shutoffs if sensors detect issues. Operational diagnostics get a clean bill of health before owner hand off.
Our 360-degree installation process covers all bases delivering an outdoor heating system optimised for performance, longevity and safety.
Outdoor Heating Repairs and Maintenance
In addition to installation, we provide both home and commercial outdoor gas heating repairs and maintenance services like:
- Leak Detection and Repairs - Using electronic gas detectors and leak solution, any fittings, hoses or components leaking gas are promptly identified and fixed. Supply lines are further pressure tested.
- Pilot Light and Ignition Fixes - Clogged pilot tube assemblies are cleaned out and igniters replaced restoring proper ignition function enabling heaters to safely operate.
- Fuel Flow Optimisations - Specialised tools measure BTU output identifying restrictions from corrosion, crimped lines or clogged burners reduced by servicing.
- Cleaning and Servicing - External debris/dirt accumulation and spider nests interfering with burner ventilation and temperatures are cleared away. Internal components are accessed and lubricated/tuned per manufacturer specifications.
- Identifying Damage/Wear - Heater frames are checked for dents and cracks while valves, knobs and switches are tested, adjusting or replacing aged parts nearing end of functional lifespan.
You can maximise the lifespan of your gas outdoor heater with prompt fixes and regular maintenance.

Outdoor Gas Heater FAQs
Yes, a wall-mounted natural gas heater can be installed on a rooftop terrace in Brisbane, provided the appliance is approved for that location and the installation meets Queensland gas safety requirements. Check whether your property has an existing natural gas connection. Not every Brisbane home or apartment has access to mains gas, and an outdoor water connection or capped pipe doesn't confirm that gas is available.
A licensed gasfitter such as S&J Plumbers will need to assess the available gas supply, pipe sizing and the heater's installation requirements. This includes checking the proposed mounting surface, ventilation and clearances from roofing, walls and other combustible materials. If you're also planning to install a natural gas BBQ, the gas supply must be sufficient to operate both appliances.
For apartment rooftop terraces, you should also check any body corporate restrictions and obtain the necessary approvals before arranging installation.
It depends on how enclosed your patio becomes when the blinds are lowered and whether your gas heater is approved for that setting. If your Brisbane home's covered patio has retractable café blinds, closing them can restrict airflow and create unsafe conditions for an outdoor gas heater. For example, a patio with a solid roof and three open sides might have plenty of ventilation during the day. But when you lower the blinds on a cold evening, the same space can become substantially enclosed. Gas heaters produce combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, which can accumulate when there isn't enough fresh air.
You can improve outdoor gas heating in a small, open patio by choosing a heater that suits your seating arrangement, positioning it where people can feel the radiant heat and reducing exposure to cold winds. If you have a 3 × 4-metre patio in your Brisbane home, a freestanding mushroom-style gas heater can provide warmth around a small seating area. Wall-mounted radiant gas heaters direct heat towards specific spots, such as an outdoor dining table or lounge setting, while overhead radiant heaters provide targeted warmth without occupying floor space. Place seating within the heater's recommended coverage area and avoid locations where strong crosswinds reduce comfort or interfere with the flame.
Before purchasing an outdoor gas heater for your Brisbane home, check that it has a recognised Australian gas appliance approval badge and certification number. Queensland requires Type A gas appliances, including applicable domestic natural gas and LPG heaters, to be approved for supply, installation and use. According to Resources Safety and Health Queensland, mass-produced Type A gas appliances can receive nationally recognised certification through an accredited approval body.
Look for the approval marking on the heater's data plate or product documentation, then verify the certification through the issuing approval body or the Gas Technical Regulators Committee. If you're unsure about a heater's certification or suitability for your patio, have S&J Plumbing & Gasfitting's licensed gasfitters review the model and proposed installation location before purchasing it.
After installing a fixed outdoor gas heater at your Brisbane home, you should receive a Gas System Compliance Certificate from your licensed gasfitter. This document confirms that the installation has been completed in accordance with Queensland's applicable gas safety requirements.
Your gasfitter must provide the gas system's owner or operator with a copy of the certificate and submit the required details through the Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) Portal.
You don't normally need a physical gas compliance plate for a residential outdoor heater installation, as Queensland removed this requirement for most gas installations in July 2025. Keep the certificate with your property records. If you haven't received it, contact the licensed gasfitter who completed the installation and request a copy.
Before purchasing an imported heater, check its product label or data plate for an Australian gas certification badge and approval number. Recognised certification bodies include the Australian Gas Association (AGA), BSI Australia and New Zealand, Global-Mark and IAPMO R&T Oceana (GasMark). You can compare the badge against the examples published on the Queensland Government's website and contact the issuing certification body to verify that the approval covers your exact heater model. Some imported appliances without existing Australian certification can qualify for individual approval, but this requires assessment by an authorised gas device approval holder.
