Types Of Electric Hot Water Systems

We work with a wide range of electric hot water systems in Brisbane, including traditional electric water heaters and newer tankless models that heat water on-demand.

Electric-Heated Water Tanks

Similar to their gas counterparts, these systems store water in a tank and heat the water with an element located underneath the storage tank. Overall, these are the most common household hot water systems throughout Brisbane. Our licensed and experienced plumbers can help replace your existing unit or install a brand-new electric hot water system in your home.

Tankless Electric Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters, also known as “demand-type,” heat water as needed before distributing hot water throughout your home. Rather than heating the entire tank, these systems heat water as it passes through a heat exchanger to deliver near-instant hot water as needed. While these systems typically have a lower flow rate than other types of water heaters, they provide exceptional efficiency by only heating water on demand.

 Electric Hot Water System FAQs

Can I run my existing electric hot water system using excess rooftop solar electricity?

Yes. You can use excess electricity from your rooftop solar panels to heat water in an existing electric storage system, provided the electrical connections and heating schedule are compatible with your solar setup. According to the Australian Government's solar guidance, switching an electric hot water system from a controlled-load tariff to daytime solar consumption is not always cheaper.

Traditional electric resistance heaters can draw more power than your solar panels generate at a particular time, causing your household to purchase additional electricity from the grid. A licensed electrician can then check your electrical circuit, solar setup and tariff requirements to determine whether any electrical modifications are necessary.

Why doesn't my electric hot water timer work outside off-peak hours?

Your electric hot water timer can control when your system heats water, but it cannot override the electricity supply hours set by your controlled-load tariff.

In Queensland, electric hot water systems connected to Tariff 31 receive electricity for at least eight hours, while Tariff 33 provides at least 16 hours. According to Energex, these supply periods can change depending on electricity network demand. For example, Energex has shifted some economy tariff supply periods away from peak morning hours and towards the middle of the day to use excess rooftop solar generation.

If your timer is programmed to operate while the controlled-load circuit has no power, your heating element won't operate, even if the timer is switched on. Your electricity retailer can explain your tariff options, while the licensed plumbers at S&J Plumbing & Gasfitting can assess your existing hot water system and discuss its heating requirements.

Do I need to upgrade my temperature controls when replacing an old electric hot water system?

You might need to upgrade your temperature controls when replacing an old electric hot water system, even if you're installing the same type of water heater.

For example, if you're replacing an older 250-litre Rheem or Dux electric storage tank with a new unit of similar capacity, your existing temperature controls must still meet Queensland's plumbing requirements. If the old system delivers water at 60°C directly to your bathroom taps without a suitable temperature-control device, your plumber must address this during the replacement.

Under Queensland Government guidelines, replacing an existing water heater requires compliant temperature control at fixtures used for personal hygiene, including showers and bathroom basins. In a typical home, the delivered water temperature at these fixtures must not exceed 50°C.

If your existing tempering valve or another approved temperature-control device is functioning correctly and meets current requirements, it doesn't automatically need replacing.

Why does replacing an older electric hot water system involve extra plumbing upgrades?

Replacing an older electric hot water system, such as a Rheem 250-litre storage tank, a Dux 160-litre unit or an older Vulcan electric water heater, can involve more than installing a new tank. Your existing valves, water pipes, insulation and mounting surface might also require upgrades if they're damaged.

For example, a Brisbane homeowner replacing an older electric hot water system might receive a quote that includes installing a compliant tempering valve to limit hot water temperatures at bathroom fixtures, adding insulation to exposed hot water pipes to reduce heat loss, or replacing damaged pressure relief and isolation valves. Not every replacement requires all these upgrades. If your existing plumbing components are in good condition and meet the applicable requirements, some can remain in place.

Why did my electric hot water start running out earlier after a smart meter upgrade?

Your electric hot water system might run out earlier after a smart meter upgrade if the electricity supply schedule for your controlled-load circuit has changed. This doesn't automatically mean there's something wrong with your hot water tank. If your electric storage tank previously reheated water during the day but now receives electricity mainly overnight, morning showers, laundry and dishwashing can use up the stored hot water before the evening. Even if your household's water usage hasn't changed, the tank might not have another opportunity to reheat until the next supply period.
